"This guidebook is an attempt to tell part of the story of the Harrisburg area during the Civil War. Much happened here but for the most part it is unknown except to those who have a specific interest in this period of history. While we could not list every person, place and event related to the years 1861 to 1865, we have attempted to present a broad spectrum of military and civilian topics." --from the introduction
The Capital area's rich Civil War heritage is covered through three tours and special feature background articles. The walking tour of downtown Harrisburg includes historic buildings still in existence such as Salem United Church of Christ, which housed Confederate wounded from the Battle of Gettysburg in one of its outbuildings, and sites of historic buildings no longer standing, such as the Jones House, which hosted President-elect Abraham Lincoln in February 1861. Also included are modern destinations of interest to the Civil War historian such as the Civil War Flag Conservation Facility, maintained by the Pennsylvania Capitol Preservation Committee, and the Pennsylvania State Museum and State Archives.
The East Shore Driving Tour takes in a diverse range of sites, including the Harrisburg Cemetery, established in 1845 and the final resting place for such Civil War notables as Simon Cameron, Maj. Gen. John White Geary and Brig. Gen. Joseph Farmer Knipe. The soldier's plot holds 155 graves--140 Union and 15 Confederate--all marked with official War Department headstones. The site of Camp Curtin, the largest Federal camp used during the Civil War, is described in detail, as is the Harris-Cameron Mansion, Civil War home of Simon Cameron and now home to the Historical Society of Dauphin County. Two important and historic African American cemeteries are included--Midland and Lincoln--as they both contain numerous Civil War graves.
The West Shore Driving Tour, in addition to providing an excellent tour of Civil War sites in Cumberland County, also tells the story of the 1863 invasion of the area by troops under the command of Brig. Gen. Albert Gallatin Jenkins, culminating in the Battle of Sporting Hill on June 30, 1863.
