The
Demobilization of the Union and Confederate Armies, 1865-1866

B. Holberton
$24.95
Hardcover, 224 pages, 17 b/w photos
Order Number: 0-8117-0788-1
What
happened to the hundreds of thousands of men in the Union and Confederate armies
after they lay down their arms? According to William Holberton, many of these
men had miles to travel before they were discharged from service, and the
passage of these miles included some rather unique situations and experiences.
As always, there was bureaucratic red tape and mishandled orders, and in some
cases, tragic accidents, such as the Sultana disaster. Beginning with the
surrender at Appomattox Court House, the author takes the reader through all the
aspects and phases of demobilization, including the Grand Review in Washington,
the desertions of soldiers overly eager to return home, the differences between
Union and Confederate demobilization, the repatriation of prisoners of war, and
the deferred demobilization of many black troops.
The
late William Holberton was a retired priest living in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
He spent the years since his retirement researching and writing Homeward Bound,
his first book. He had previously published related articles in magazines such
as Civil War Times Illustrated.

A Military Book Club/History Book Club Alternate Selection

The
Civil War was an era of unparalleled innovation. From armored battleships and
hot air balloons to photography and medical care, the period between 1861 and
1865 saw a great transition in the way the world fought, recorded, and survived
war. It wrought change in the lives of individuals as well, transforming society
unlike any other single event in American history. Authors Gerald S. Henig and
Eric Niderost trace these changes and explore the legacies of America's
bloodiest conflict in this thought-provoking study.
Gerald
Henig is a professor of history at California State University, Hayward. He is
the author of Henry Winter Davis: Antebellum and Civil War Congressman from
Maryland, and various articles on the political and military history of the
Civil War. Eric Niderost is instructor of history at Chabot College in Hayward,
California. A freelance author, he has published nearly 300 articles on American
and European history.

"Readers
have come to recognize Albert Castel as one of the masters of the Civil War
genre, and in Articles of War he demonstrates yet again that they are
right."
--William C. Davis, former editor of Civil War Times Illustrated
The
American Civil War is filled with fascinating characters. This collection of
biographical essays on the "winners and losers" of the Civil War
covers some of the most intriguing: Ulysses S. Grant, Sam Houston, Nathan
Bedford Forrest, and William Clarke Quantrill, to name just a few. The articles
represent a broad cross-section of the scholarship of noted author Albert Castel;
most were written over a fifty-year period for publication in national
"popular history" magazines such as American Heritage, Civil
War History, and Civil War Times Illustrated.
Albert
Castel is one of the most respected and prolific scholars
in the Civil War community. He has won several prizes for his work, most
notably the 1993 Lincoln Prize for Decision in the West: The Atlanta Campaign
of 1864. Castel previously co-authored Bloody
Bill Anderson: The Short, Savage Life of a Civil War Guerrilla.
